CHIME Telescope

CHIME Telescope

An international research team, including scientists from Bengaluru’s Raman Research Institute (RRI), has detected the faint radio signature of hydrogen from about nine billion years ago using the CHIME Telescope.

About CHIME Telescope

  • CHIME stands for Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment, also known as the CHIME Radio Telescope.
  • It is a radio telescope located at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in British Columbia, Canada, making it an important CHIME Telescope Canada facility.
  • It was designed primarily to map neutral hydrogen across large regions of the Universe through Hydrogen Intensity Mapping.
  • Unlike conventional dish telescopes, the CHIME Radio Telescope has no moving parts and represents an innovative approach to CHIME Radio Astronomy.

Key Features

  • It consists of four large cylindrical reflectors fitted with over 1,000 antenna elements.
  • It observes radio frequencies between 400 and 800 MHz.
  • As the Earth rotates, different portions of the sky pass over the telescope, allowing it to survey roughly half the sky each day.
  • A powerful digital correlator processes enormous quantities of incoming signals and enables the telescope to focus electronically, supporting the CHIME Cosmology Experiment.

Scientific Importance

  • Hydrogen mapping: Neutral hydrogen emits a characteristic 21-cm radio signal, which scientists use to trace matter across cosmic history and advance Hydrogen Intensity Mapping using this Radio Astronomy Telescope.
  • Universe evolution: Mapping distant hydrogen can help researchers understand how large-scale structures such as galaxies developed, contributing to CHIME Cosmology and CHIME Dark Energy Research.
  • Fast Radio Bursts: CHIME has also become an important instrument for detecting CHIME Fast Radio Bursts—extremely brief and powerful radio signals from distant cosmic sources. Fast Radio Bursts CHIME observations contribute to improved Fast Radio Burst Detection.
  • Indian contribution: Participation by RRI researchers highlights India’s growing role in international CHIME Radio Astronomy research.

Conclusion

CHIME Telescope demonstrates how radio astronomy can look billions of years into the cosmic past and help reconstruct the evolution of our Universe, making it important for CHIME Telescope UPSC and Astronomy and Space Science UPSC preparation.
